The magic spark of real community

Quote of the Day, Oct 16, 2008

“Real community is a self-creating thing, with some magic spark, easy to recognize after the fact but impossible to produce on demand, that draws people together. Once those people have formed a community, however, they will act in the interests of the community, even if those aren’t your interests. You need to be prepared for this. “

  1. Wow that’s some food for thought. You have to be prepared for it, but it doesn’t have to be a scary thing. I’m reading "Crowdsourcing" by Jeff Howe at the moment, and he points to iStockphoto and Threadless.com as two companies that have been hugely successful by working for the community.

Also can’t wait to get my hands on Tribes, Seth Godin’s new book.

  2. Dan, Thanks for the comment. You’re right that "real community" does not have to be scary. I think the point is that those who want to build community need to be ready for leadership. Community leadership means being prepared to accept the diversity of that community. It seems to me the most successful communities are those where the leaders are more accessible yet less controlling.
